The Art of Pop #2.

A series of mainstream pop songs, as curated by myself and @danielsargeant.

Yes, I know these songs are/were popular. What I’m saying is that they are also good.

#2 –  ‘Since U Been Gone’ by Kelly Clarkson. Okay, feel free to think me ridiculous but Kelly Clarkson’s second album Breakaway is one of the best mainstream pop/rock albums of the decade. Waying much more heavily than one might expect to the ‘rock’ side of that equation, the anthemic ‘Since U Been Gone’ builds from a simple riff and drum machine intro into a shout-a-long girl rock chorus. It’s shocking that a product of the American Idol factory could produce anything with this much actual life to it. Let’s end with a little wikipedia: “Its lyrics recall a failed relationship in which the protagonist later expresses relief about the breakup.” Thank you wiki writers of the world for some of the most glorious/ridiculous literal descriptive text.
