One of the more primary buzzbands at the moment, the London based baroque pop-ers can be cynically summed up as ‘Arcade Fire fronted by Zach Condon’. Listening to Reservoir (which you can buy right now for $1)proves a much richer experience than that reduction. With big instrumentation and passionate vocals, it’s hard to go wrong with a song like ‘Luna’.
Austin, TX quartet Conquistador have two self released EPs to their name so far and a sound that is equal parts Ween and Nine Inch Nails. ‘Power of Passionate Shoppin’ ‘, the lead track off their second EP, is synthed out 80s coke rock with a social conscious… unless they are just fucking with us. Either way- awesome.
Singer/bassist for Dirty Projectors Angel Deradoorian is definitely my indie rock crush of the moment. On Mind Raft, her debut solo EP, we get 22 minutes of slow jam and vocals that wouldn’t seem out of place as sections of songs by DP proper.
“It may be true that one has to choose between ethics and aesthetics, but it is no less true that whichever one chooses, one will always find the other at the end of the road.”
